This piece was inspired by a situation I ran into while trying to re-pot two plants that I had together in one planter. Their roots had become so intertwined that I didn’t feel that I could separate them without causing too much damage and killing both plants. Similarly, I feel that human society is full of deeply rooted things, both the good and the bad.

I think specifically of the people in our communities that we could not function as a society without. Sometimes it’s leaders, ministers, artists, authors, sages, viral influencers, the people we tend to look to as important. But society is also carried on the backs of farmers, of child caregivers, elderly grandparents with Alzheimer’s, people with disabilities, janitors, retail employees… and many, many more.

Society is intertwined with so many unique, different kinds of humans. And often, community, love, and revelation can be waiting for us in the people we take for granted.
