Common ground is at the heart of my work, both literally and figuratively. I work with materials that come with stories of human connection - lace and fabric passed down through generations, bits of discarded garments that have clothed another human being, bedsheets worn thin from holding people. I manipulate these materials with dyes and stains made from plants and fungi - the very ground beneath our feet - connecting them back to the natural world. The stitched marks I make on these layered fabrics speak of maps, fungal and neural networks, repetition as a common language.
