Gone is the drab, grey, cracking jungle of metropolitan living and replaced with the lush, green scenery I wake up to each morning. A variety of birds abound with their wakeful chirps. Squirrels forage, chickens graze. A stroll through Mount Sequoyah brings a sense of calm among other walkers, joggers, or people overlooking the city of Fayetteville. In Bentonville, you can take a respite from the museum gallery and find yourself again through trails where art installations greet you alongside cyclists.

For 'Our Common Ground', my piece focuses on the State Butterfly: The Diana Fritillary. Named after the Roman goddess, she represents hunting, wilderness, and animals. The two arrows beside the butterfly symbolize that 'hunt', that need for a life outdoors, to connect with what is real and true. My time here has shown me the kindness of people: from vendor events, art classes, to the many community organizers.

Below, the Purple Coneflower symbolizes nature and the love and care I've seen from others. Natives in Fayetteville urge for the protection of the trees in Mount Sequoyah. Parks are fought for time and time again. Prairie Grove citizens bring awareness to environmental issues affecting their neighborhoods. Bumper stickers call for action in the saving of Buffalo River.

"…as a state symbol reflects Arkansas' pride and concern for wildlife…education has resulted in a greater awareness of our natural resources." —Lori A.
