During his earliest decades of activity, Benham Carter Dangers was known primarily as a portraitist whose works offered a keen likeness of his subjects. His studies at the Pratt Institute were interrupted during World War II when the artist was called to serve as an artist for the United States Army. Dangers painted many portraits of soldiers of the Alaskan Defense Command.

Once his coursework in New York was complete, Dangers spent periods living and working in both Fort Smith, Arkansas, and New York City. By his later years, the painter’s penchant for precision became equally focused on still life subjects. A Florida newspaper noted that, “his acrylics have such startling realism that one feels they could reach right in and touch the flowers, shells or fruit depicted." - Arkansas Made
