Being inspired by nature, my ceramic work focuses on aspects of the non-human world: the flare of a turtle shell, swelling of a seed pod, the shape of an exoskeleton or the spread of a wing. My vessels will always incorporate the lines, forms, and implied mass of objects seen and found in nature. I am also interested in interpreting the perceived “mistakes” or abnormalities of nature: what isn’t traditionally beautiful and what humans often see as the imperfect or strange. Red Bud Rack combines a misshapen red bud tree trunk: a burl resulting from stress or disease, or an accommodation of growing over or around interference such as a wire fence. This beast of my imagination is one of life interrupted, a portrait reminiscent of the hunting trophies of deer and elk. My transformation of interruption is a powerful metaphor for accommodation to be embraced and celebrated.
