This year’s Invitational theme gave me instant inspiration to depict the socially chaotic times we live in. But much more personally, I chose to paint how daily intrusions of my own unnamed fears, hopes, fantasies, and annoying interruptions affect my available time and energies, my own personal bandwidth.

It’s easy to imagine these disrupters as little beasts, creatures breaking through the flimsy guards I’ve put up to protect my attention span, time limitations, and fragile human ego.

Of course, the beasts are all my own making.

This digital painting was made with Flame Painter, an EscapeMotions painting program for creating abstract digital brushes. The brushes all have a specific “stamp” or shape that can be changed and modified at will. I created the brushes and color palettes used in this painting. My images are made by hand, with a pressure-sensitive pen on a touch-sensitive screen. I do not manipulate photos or use AI software that generates images on command.
