"When selecting wood for a piece, I pass by the clean, straight pieces and look for the knotted, twisted, damaged wood that has suffered through storms and rot and bugs, and has covered its scars with massive burls. I take this wood with so much character and turn and study it and try to see inside to where the beautiful will be. I then take this damaged piece and turn it, hollow it and give it new purpose. The wood's growth and struggle is what gives the piece its beauty.
In the same way, God selects us when we are flawed and damaged. He hollows us out, turns us around and gives us new purpose. It is the struggle and the overcoming that gives us real beauty."
