The artwork for this year’s Invitational is a sculpted representation of a chimera of a shark, whale, and narwhal. This combination was chosen due to the focus of each animal’s most prominent feature. The placement of teeth and structure of the shark is the main focus, due to how recognizable this creature’s shape is and its associated nature. The neck is representative of the humpback whale, and in association with the eating capabilities of a shark, creates the assumption that the chimera has the capability to eat large amounts of prey. The horns on the jaw are taken from the narwhal but turn up to imply that it is used to help latch onto its pray. The balance of these features helps the viewer see an implied movement and aggression in the nature of the animal.
